English Premiership Round 12

English Premiership Round 12

Round 12 of the Gallagher Premiership delivered a mix of statement wins, stunning comebacks, and historic scorelines across the board. Leicester silenced Franklin’s Gardens with a dominant shutout over the Saints, while Harlequins flipped the script on Saracens with a gutsy second-half turnaround in north London. Bristol and Exeter produced a record-breaking 14-try shootout, Bath extended their lead at the top, and Sale continued their northern dominance over the Falcons. Whether chasing playoff contention or battling for pride, every team had something to prove—and the action didn’t disappoint.

Here’s how it all unfolded across the Premiership:

LEICESTER CRUSH SAINTS WITH FIRST-HALF BLITZ AT FRANKLIN’S GARDENS

Northampton Saints 0 – 33 Leicester Tigers (HT: 0-23)

Leicester Tigers dominated from start to finish in a commanding 33-0 away victory over fierce rivals Northampton Saints in Round 12 of the Gallagher Premiership. It was a statement win for the Tigers, who crossed four times, shut out the defending champions, and climbed to third in the table. The tone was set early as Adam Radwan scored in the 4th minute, finishing off a smooth backs move. Just minutes later, Jack van Poortvliet produced the highlight of the match—a sensational solo try featuring a line break from deep, a pinpoint chip over the top, and a regather to touch down under pressure. Saints were stunned, and Leicester weren’t done. Ollie Cracknell powered over from close range off a maul in the 13th minute, with the accurate boot of Handré Pollard adding three penalties and two conversions to open a 23-0 lead by halftime. Saints, for their part, were wasteful and disjointed, racking up 26 handling errors and failing to capitalize on three disallowed tries. The second half lacked the flair of the first, but Leicester’s defence remained resolute. Northampton had a few chances, including a near-try from England debutant Henry Pollock, but the Tigers held firm. Replacement hooker Charlie Clare secured the bonus point in the closing stages with a try under the posts following another Saints error. For Northampton, it was the first time they had been held scoreless at home in over a year and a severe blow to their playoff hopes. Meanwhile, Leicester look poised for a strong run-in with their internationals back and firing.

SALE SHARKS SWEEP ASIDE FALCONS IN NORTHERN DERBY SHOWDOWN

Newcastle Falcons 15 – 39 Sale Sharks (HT: 10-27)

Sale Sharks restarted their Premiership campaign in style, running in five tries to dominate Newcastle Falcons 39-15 at Kingston Park and claim their fifth consecutive win in the northern derby. George Ford pulled the strings masterfully, contributing 14 points with the boot and creating two tries, as Sale climbed into fifth place—just one point outside the playoff positions. Sale’s returning England stars wasted no time asserting their authority. A Ford penalty opened the scoring before loosehead prop Bevan Rodd powered over from short range to make it 10-0. Former Sale man Cameron Neild crossed for Newcastle’s first try, briefly narrowing the margin to 10-7, but the Sharks surged ahead before the break. Rob du Preez finished a flowing move started by Tom Roebuck’s offload, and Ford’s quick hands sent Tom O’Flaherty in just before halftime to stretch the lead to 27-10. Newcastle had their moments but failed to capitalize, with missed kicks and defensive lapses costing them dearly. Sale secured the bonus point early in the second half through hooker Tadgh McElroy, before Ford capped his stellar performance with a pinpoint cross-field kick for Joe Carpenter, who slid in for the Sharks’ fifth and final try. The Falcons grabbed a late consolation through replacement prop Richard Palframan, but the result underlined their continued struggles at the bottom of the table—where they sit six points adrift with a crucial clash against Exeter looming.

NEWCASTLE FALCONS

  • Conversions: Connon (22’)
  • Penalties: Connon (32’)

HARLEQUINS STUN SARACENS WITH COMEBACK DERBY WIN AT TOTTENHAM STADIUM

Saracens 12 – 23 Harlequins (HT: 12-0)

Jamie Benson came off the bench to spark a sensational second-half comeback as Harlequins overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Saracens 23-12 in the London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The 22-year-old fly-half kicked 13 points and controlled proceedings after the break, lifting Quins into the Premiership top four and completing a first away win over Saracens since 2012. Saracens appeared in control early, taking advantage of a nervy Quins start. Theo McFarland barged over after a quick tap from Jamie George, and Tobias Elliott added a second try just before the break following slick hands from Alex Goode and Fergus Burke. Alex Lozowski converted one to give the hosts a 12-0 lead at the half. However, Quins coach Danny Wilson reshuffled his lineup at the break, including the introduction of Benson, who proved to be the difference. On the hour mark, Oscar Beard’s incisive break and offload found Ben Waghorn for a crucial try, converted by Benson to close the gap to 12-7. Saracens had a chance to respond immediately, but Lozowski missed a penalty after Quins were marched back 10 metres for dissent. From there, the momentum firmly shifted. Benson slotted three penalties in the final 12 minutes—each one more composed than the last—to turn the game on its head and hand Quins a 16-12 lead. Will Porter’s converted try at the death sealed a famous win for the visitors, who also completed a season double over Saracens—something they hadn’t done in over a decade.

SARACENS

  • Tries: McFarland (4’), Elliott (38’)
  • Conversions: Lozowski (39’)

HARLEQUINS

  • Tries: Waghorn (63’), Porter (80’)

BRISTOL OUTGUN EXETER IN RECORD-BREAKING 14-TRY SHOOTOUT AT ASHTON GATE

Bristol Bears 52 – 38 Exeter Chiefs (HT: 40-24)

Jack Bates scored a sensational hat-trick as Bristol Bears claimed a wild 52-38 win over Exeter Chiefs in a record-breaking, 14-try Gallagher Premiership thriller at Ashton Gate. The Bears racked up a bonus point inside 16 minutes—just shy of the league record—and outscored the visitors 8 tries to 6 despite playing over 50 minutes with 14 men following Santiago Grondona’s red card. The match opened with a flurry, as Jack Bates touched down in the 2nd minute, followed in quick succession by James Williams, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, and a second for Williams—all within the first quarter of an hour. Exeter kept pace early with tries from Martin Moloney, Henry Slade, Dafydd Jenkins, and Josh Hodge, but Bristol pulled away to lead 40-24 at halftime—marking the highest-scoring first half in Premiership history. Despite losing Grondona before the break, Pat Lam’s side continued to dominate with second-half tries from Steve Luatua and Bates, who completed his hat-trick after a clever quick tap from Harry Randall. Exeter managed two late consolation scores through Jack Yeandle and Will Rigg, but the damage was done. Bristol stay hot on Bath’s heels at the top of the table, while Exeter’s defensive frailties leave them languishing in 9th with just six rounds remaining.

BRISTOL BEARS

  • Tries: Bates (1’, 27’, 56’), Williams (6’, 15’), Janse van Rensburg (10’), Randall (42’), Luatua (46’)

EXETER CHIEFS

  • Tries: Moloney (5’), Slade (8’), Jenkins (18’), Hodge (29’), Yeandle (65’), Rigg (73’)
  • Conversions: Slade (5'), Hodge (19', 66', 74')

BATH POWER PAST GLOUCESTER TO STAY TOP OF THE PREMIERSHIP

Bath 42 – 26 Gloucester (HT: 28-26)

Bath claimed West Country bragging rights and regained their six-point lead at the top of the Gallagher Premiership with a commanding 42-26 bonus-point win over Gloucester at the Rec. Both sides lit up the first half with four tries apiece, but the hosts tightened the screws after the break, shutting out their rivals and finishing with six tries to Gloucester’s four. Guy Pepper, Max Ojomoh, Thomas du Toit, and Finn Russell all crossed in a blistering opening 40 minutes for Bath, who had the edge thanks to a crucial charged-down conversion by Will Muir. Gloucester fired back through Jack Clement, Jonny Williams, Seb Blake, and George Barton in a wildly entertaining first half, which ended 28-26. But the second half was all Bath. With Christian Wade sin-binned for a ruck infringement, Bath hammered away at Gloucester’s defensive wall before finally breaking through with tries from Will Stuart and Sam Underhill. Russell, who had a hand in nearly everything, converted all six scores in a perfect night off the tee. While Bath extended their lead at the summit, Gloucester fell from third to fifth after failing to score a single point after the interval.

BATH

  • Tries: Pepper (6’), Ojomoh (17’), Du Toit (23’), Russell (35’), Stuart (61’), Underhill (71’)
  • Conversions: Russell (6', 18', 24', 36', 62', 72')
